Rule Changes Opposed
Hawai‘i Governor Linda Lingle and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a letter this week to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff urging him to reject proposed federal rule changes that would adversely impact the Hawai‘i and California cruise industries and harm the economies of the two states.
Governor Named Honorary Member of Kamehameha Lions Club

Visiting Yad Vashem
While in Israel this week, Governor Lingle visited Yad Vashem, the memorial to the Holocaust, to pay her respects to the six million adults and children who were killed. It is customary for visiting dignitaries to tour these historic sites.

Investing in Infrastructure
Governor Lingle released $26.8 million for capital improvement projects at schools across the state, including $15 million for the design and construction of ongoing school repairs and maintenance, and $10 million to continue the closure and conversion of cesspools at schools statewide to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water Act.
Maui Writers Conference Hits the Road
Governor Lingle welcomed presenters, agents and editors - including Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winners and bestselling authors to Hawai`i as part of Maui Writers Conference.
Honoring the "World's Greatest Athlete"
Governor Lingle welcomed the "World's Greatest Athlete," Hawai`i's own Bryan Clay, to the State Capitol following his outstanding performance at the Beijing Olympic Games. Clay earned the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon and was the first American to earn the title since the 1996 games.
September is Senior Fall Prevention Awareness Month
In order to maintain the safety and well-being of Hawai`i seniors, the Department of Health is partnering with Times Supermarkets, Safeway Stores, Costco Pharmacies and KTA Superstores to sponsor Senior Fall Prevention Awareness Month during the month of September.
State Signs Agreement to Improve Language Access
The state Department of Human Services (DHS) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) have signed an agreement to improve language assistance services for limited English proficient (LEP) persons in Hawai`i.
