WASHINGTON, May 30, 2006-Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns will open the 2006 USDA Farmers Market season at 10 a.m. on June 2.
This will be the 11th season for the USDA Farmers Market, which features local farmers from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. The farmers will sell fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, maple products, fresh-cut flowers and much more. The market is open to the public.
"The Department of Agriculture strongly supports farmers markets, which have proved to greatly benefit producers and consumers alike," Johanns said. "Today there are more than 3,800 farmers markets across the country, and the number is growing all the time."
The opening ceremonies will feature live music, raffle prizes, and an informational booth for customers to obtain free material on other related USDA programs.
The USDA Farmers Market will operate every Friday, June 2 through October 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located at USDA Headquarters at 12th and Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC
