WIC Program

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children—better known as the WIC Program—serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care. ERS conducts research on WIC program participation, program targeting and access, program outcomes, and how the program interacts with other food and nutrition assistance programs.

Spotlights

Recent Trends and Economic Issues in the WIC Infant Formula Rebate Program—Over half of all infant formula sold in the United States is purchased through the WIC Program. WIC State agencies obtain substantial rebates from infant formula manufacturers, and this analysis suggests that retail markup accounts for most of the cost to WIC of infant formula in most States.

WIC and the Retail Price of Infant Formula—This report presents findings from the most comprehensive national study of infant formula prices at the retail level. For a given set of wholesale prices, WIC and its infant formula rebate program resulted in modest increases in the supermarket price of infant formula, especially in States with a high percentage of WIC formula-fed infants.
