The Alaska Fisheries Science Center AFSC), including the AFSC Directorate, is based in the NOAA Western Regional Center's Sand Point Facility in Seattle, Washington. The facility is located on Lake Washington, adjacent to the former Sand Point Naval Air Station. Federal research at Sand Point began in 1957 with the transfer of the Marine Mammal Laboratory from Edmonds, Washington. The AFSC, formerly part of the Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center, moved to Sand Point in 1984.

The Western Regional Center consists of nine building which contain 473,938 square feet. The AFSC occupies and shares space in four of the buildings. Building 4 contains offices, computer rooms, a library, graphics studios, laboratories, conference rooms, copy rooms, dark rooms, and storage space. Building 4 Particulars:

  • Special Features: A 600-square-foot dive locker.

Building 32 contains a net loft, shop, warehouse, and wet labs. Building 32 Particulars:

  • Constructed: Over 50 years ago as a military facility
  • Size: 110,000 square feet
  • Overall Condition: Good for its intended use
  • Number of Personnel: Approx. 6 NOAA employees
  • Utilization: At capacity
  • Special Features: High ceilings for net storage and repair.

Building 33 has no heat and limited electricity and is used for bulk storage. Special features include large storage areas with high ceilings, concrete floors, and high, wide entry doors for large vehicles and loads. Building 33 Particulars:

  • Constructed: Over 50 years ago as a military facility
  • Size: 98,000 square feet
  • Overall Condition: Fair
