"In the coming weeks, our keiki and University students will be going back to school. With more families and drivers are on the road, we are reminded of the need for traffic safety.

To ease traffic congestion, the Department of Transportation recently raised the number of passengers in the Zipperlane on O`ahu from two to three. This adjustment encourages carpooling, which will ultimately help traffic move more quickly and provide for a shorter commute.

Many of Hawai`i's students walk or bike to and from school, which means it is important for us to be mindful of pedestrian safety. Whether walking, driving or bicycling, it is important that we all do our part to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in school zones and near playgrounds.

We wish all of our students and teachers a safe and productive new school year!
