CDC Research

• "Cervical cancer screening among foreign-born women by birthplace and duration in the United States" in the December 2007 issue of the Journal of Women's Health found that significant differences exist in rates of screening for cervical cancer between foreign-born groups by birthplace and by duration in the United States. • "Cervical cancer incidence in the United States by area of residence, 1998–2001" in the September 2007 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology examined differences in cervical cancer incidence rates among women in rural, suburban, and metropolitan areas of the U.S.



• "Cervical cancer incidence in a prevaccine era in the United States, 1998–2002" in the February 2007 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology explored the incidence of cervical cancer by geography, race or ethnicity, and histology, and found that higher rates of cervical cancer persist among women in the South and women who are African American or Hispanic.



• "Cost-effectiveness of extending cervical cancer screening intervals among women with prior normal Pap tests" in the February 2006 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology examined the cost-effectiveness of screening women with three or more prior normal Pap tests compared with screening those with no prior tests and concluded that resources should be prioritized for screening those never or rarely screened women.



• "Pap test intervals used by physicians serving low-income women through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program" in the October 2005 issue of the Journal of Women's Health described specific screening practices of health care providers participating in the NBCCEDP.



• "Risk of cervical cancer associated with extending the interval between cervical cancer screenings" in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2003 presented evidence that most women can safely extend their cervical cancer screening interval from once a year to once every three years.
