GOV. RITTER APPOINTS JUDGES IN ALAMOSA AND CONEJOS COUNTIES

Gov. Bill Ritter today announced he has appointed Michael Anthony Gonzales of Alamosa to serve as an Alamosa County Court judge, and Mary Elizabeth Garcia of Manassa to serve as a Conejos County Court judge.

Michael Gonzales has served as chief deputy district attorney for the 12th Judicial District since 2001, and as deputy district attorney for the four years prior to that. He is also an instructor at Trinidad State Junior College and the Southern Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy. Gonzales received his bachelor's degree from Creighton University in 1993 and his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1996.

Mary Garcia has served as a municipal judge for the town of La Jara since 1987, and has been a private practitioner with the Garcia Law Offices since 1986. Her area of practice was primarily in family law and custodial issues. She earned her bachelor's degree from Adams State College in 1965 and her law degree from the University of Denver in 1980.

The initial term of office for a county court judge is a provisional term of two years, and then until the second Tuesday in January following the next general election.
