TRANSPORTATION PANEL TO MEET IN MEEKER

Gov. Bill Ritter's blue ribbon transportation panel will meet on the Western Slope later this month to hear from local transportation experts about northwest Colorado transportation needs. The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday June 29 at the Fairfield Center in Meeker.

This will be the first meeting outside of the metro area for the Colorado Transportation Finance and Implementation Panel, which kicked off its work with a statewide transportation summit in April.

'It's extremely important to the panel that we hear about local transportation needs from local experts,' said Doug Aden, one of the panel's co-chairs and a resident of Grand Junction. 'We're interested in gathering information from rural Colorado, and at the meeting in Meeker we want to hear how the energy industry is impacting the transportation infrastructure.'

Gov. Ritter convened the 30-member transportation council to explore the state's transportation revenue challenges. The state's primary revenue sources are declining while demand and the cost of construction and maintenance are rising. Final recommendations are due to the Governor by the end of the year.
