Prodell Middle School Wins Science Bowl at Brookhaven LabBellport Middle School Takes First Place in Hydrogen Car ChallengeApril 15, 2008 UPTON, NY - Students from the Albert G. Prodell Middle School in Shoreham were the first-place champions at the Regional Middle School Science Bowl held April 12 at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. One hundred students from sixteen Long Island middle schools participated in the question-and-answer tournament designed to test students' knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science, and general science. Bellport Middle School took second place in the academic contest, Commack Middle School came in third, and John F. Kennedy Middle School in Port Jefferson Station came in fourth place. Bellport Middle School won first place in the hydrogen fuel-cell model car competition, in which students design, build and race model cars. The team's car raced down the ten-meter track in 5.09 seconds. The team from Our Lady of the Hamptons placed second, taking 7.06 seconds to send their car down the track. Third place in the model car competition went to the Commack Middle School team, whose car went down the track in 7.28 seconds. The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab is part of the National Science Bowl® coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. In 2007, more than 3,000 students participated in 34 regional events throughout the nation. By taking part in this "Jeopardy"-style academic contest and model hydrogen fuel-cell car competition, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields. Each student in the winning teams received a medal, and each winning team received a trophy for its school. The Alfred G. Prodell Middle School will represent the Long Island region in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Golden, Colorado, from June 19-22, 2008. The U.S. Department of Energy will fund the team's all-expense- paid trip.
