Coordinated by Brookhaven Women in Science and funded by Brookhaven Science Associates, high school career days are held at the Laboratory to interest young women in careers in science. After being introduced to the Laboratory and Brookhaven Women in Science, a Laboratory-based, not-for-profit organization that promotes the advancement of women in science, the students listened to a panel discussion on scientific careers given by Brookhaven Lab researchers - neuropharmacologist Martine Mirrione and physicist Cecilia Sanchez-Hanke - and Deb Klein, a student who is enrolled in the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at Stony Brook University (SBU). Sharon Pavulaan, coordinator for the WISE program at SBU, gave an overview of the program, which aims to increase the number of women in science, engineering and related fields. In addition, Brookhaven neurobiologist Wynne Schiffer gave a talk about her research on addiction. Schiffer uses an imaging method called positron emission tomography to see how drugs and alcohol affect the brain. The students toured the National Synchrotron Light Source, where researchers use x-rays, ultraviolet light and infrared light to probe materials as diverse as computer chips and viruses; and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, Brookhaven's premiere accelerator where physicists investigate the properties of matter as they existed microseconds after the Big Bang. They also visited the Laboratory's Science Learning Center, where they enjoyed interactive exhibits. Related Links
