Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Communication Internship

Brookhaven’s Media & Communications Office offers year-round internships for undergraduate students interested in science writing and communication. Participants will work at least ten 40-hour weeks on science news and feature stories for a variety of media outlets, including: The Bulletin, a weekly newspaper for employees and users; Discover Brookhaven, a periodical magazine showcasing the Laboratory’s scientific research and discoveries; and Brookhaven’s website. Interns also will work on projects that might include news releases, fact sheets, brochures, video scripts, and government-relations work.

Brookhaven is a world-leading multipurpose research institution with six Nobel Prizes to its name. Located on a 5,300-acre site on Long Island, NY, the Laboratory performs research in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and advanced technology. In addition to Brookhaven’s 2,700 scientists, engineers, and support staff, some 5,000 researchers from across the country and around the world come to the Laboratory each year to use its research facilities and collaborate with its scientific staff. Science communication interns work at the level of the professional staff in the Media & Communications Office and have access to some of the most exciting stories and leaders in the scientific field.

Qualifications: Participants must be full-time undergraduate students or graduating seniors at an accredited college or university and must have a strong interest in science-related journalism or communication.

What we look for: Well-developed writing skills and an interest in science. Writing samples – articles published in a newspaper or magazine or stories written for class – are most important in the final decision.

Support: $400 per week stipend plus dormitory-style, single-room housing on BNL’s site

Dates of internship: June-August (10 weeks), September-December (16 weeks), and January-May (16 weeks). Dates are flexible.

Application Deadlines:
Fall 2008 (September- December): July 18, 2008
Future dates to be announced
