The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking public comment on a proposed decommissioning plan for the inactive High Flux Beam Reactor at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The public comment period will be open from Thursday, January 10 through Monday, March 17, 2008.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has issued its 2006 Site Environmental Report. Report highlights include the Lab's recycling or re-use of more than 13 million pounds of waste, its launch of an open space stewardship program with Suffolk County students and teachers, and its recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for reducing mercury waste and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) use on site.

Brookhaven National Laboratory has won the 2007 Commuter Choice Regional Leadership Award for its numerous programs to encourage ridesharing among 2,600 employees and more than 5,000 visiting scientists each year. The Laboratory was among ten Long Island companies that won awards this year in the regional contest that also includes New York City, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties.

Open SpaceBrookhaven Lab Celebrates First Year of Open Space Stewardship Program
About 250 students, parents, teachers, land stewards, administrators and public officials attended a celebration at Brookhaven Lab on May 24 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Open Space Stewardship Program, a school-community-government partnership initiated by Brookhaven Lab's Office of Educational Programs.

EnvironmentBrookhaven Lab Wins Awards for Pollution Prevention and Promoting Environmental Stewardship
Brookhaven Lab has won two awards for pollution prevention and promoting environmental stewardship: DOE's Pollution Prevention Star Award and the White House Closing the Circle Award. Both awards will be presented to Brookhaven Lab in Washington, D.C., on June 7 and June 12, respectively.
