Initial Field Hearing in
Washington, D.C.
The Federal-State Joint Conference on Advanced Telecommunications Services (Joint Conference) will hold its initial meeting and field hearing on March 8, 2000, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Renaissance Hotel, 999 9th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
The meeting will be hosted by FCC Chairman William Kennard and the Chair of the Regulatory Commission of Alaska, G. Nanette Thompson. Participants will include FCC Commissioners Susan Ness, Harold Furchtgott-Roth, Michael K. Powell, and Gloria Tristani; State Commissioners Jo Anne Sanford, Chair of the North Carolina Utilities Commission; Irma Muse Dixon, Chair of the Louisiana Public Service Commission; Steve Furtney, Deputy Chair of the Wyoming Public Service Commission; Brett Perlman, Commissioner at the Public Utility Commission of Texas; and Bob Rowe, NARUC President and Montana Public Service Commissioner.
Part of the Joint Conference's mission is to gather information on the deployment of advanced telecommunications services. At this initial meeting, the Joint Conference will focus on deployment of broadband in inner cities, including examining successful and creative means to bring high speed services to previously underserved communities. For example, a community may facilitate broadband deployment by bringing many potential users of advanced services together, thereby aggregating demand to increase buying power. The information gathered at this meeting will be included in a compilation of best practices, which will provide guidance to communities across the nation to accelerate deployment of advanced services.
