Gallatin NF Fire, Fuel & Aviation Programs
The five Ranger Districts of the Gallatin National Forest are divided into two Fire Management Zones for preparedness, fuel management and suppression activities. These two zones are the East Zone Unit (the Livingston, Big Timber, and Gardiner Ranger Districts), and the West Zone Unit (the Bozeman and the Hebgen Lake Ranger Districts).
Bozeman Interagency Dispatch Center
The Forest’s suppression activities are coordinated through the Bozeman Interagency Dispatch Center (BZC). The Center provides services for Yellowstone National Park, the Montana Department of Natural Resources, Gallatin National Forest, and Gallatin, Park, Sweet Grass, Meagher, and Madison Counties. It is located in the Gallatin National Forest Supervisor's Office in Bozeman, MT.
The Forest manages a USDA and USDI interagency smokejumper and fire retardant base at West Yellowstone, Montana. Typically, the West Yellowstone Interagency Fire Center (WYIFC) is fully operational from the first of July thru mid September. The Base operates with approximately 30 smokejumpers, which are considered shared national resources. WYIFC's primary service area is the Greater Yellowstone Area, which consist of six National Forests and two National Parks. WYIFC also has an air tanker base and landing strip, which accommodates heavy air tankers.
