11. What steps can I take to lose weight to prevent type 2 diabetes?

If you are overweight or obese, choose sensible ways to prevent or delay the disease:

  • Avoid crash diets. Instead, eat foods that are low in fat, salt, and sugar and high in fiber, such as dried beans and peas, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Increase your physical activity. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. Check with your doctor before you begin any exercise program.
