OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 4, 1997 — Dr. Po-Yung Lu of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) recently was elected chairman of the Chemical Health and Safety Division (DivCHAS) of the American Chemical Society.

The DivCHAS has more than 2,500 members throughout the world, including those from disciplines such as chemistry, physics, medicine, engineering and industrial hygiene.

The objectives of the division are to promote chemical health and safety, provide a forum for discussing related laws and regulations and to spread information on chemicals which affect health and safety through the workplace and environment.

He earned his master's degree in zoology and his doctoral degree in environmental toxicology from the University of Illinois.

He is also a member of the Society of Toxicology. Lu and his wife, Tse-Yuan, live in Oak Ridge with their two children, Brian and Janet.
