ORNL environmental researcher honored with award from YWCA

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 15, 1997 — Dr. Carolyn Hunsaker, a research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), was awarded the 1997 YWCA Tribute to Women Award in science and technology by the Knoxville YWCA.

She was recognized for her research in the areas of environmental impact assessment, water quality characterization and modeling, and landscape ecology. She has authored more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.

She was also recognized for her leadership skills, ranging from project management and marketing new sponsors to her ability for organizing multidisciplinary research teams. Her active participation in professional societies was recognized as demonstrating leadership and a significant commitment to serve the scientific community.

Hunsaker earned her doctorate in 1980 in environmental science and engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles. She previously earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Pacific Union (Calif.) College and a master's in biology from Loma Linda (Calif.) University.

She joined ORNL in 1981. Hunsaker is a member of the board of trustees of the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice, serves on the advisory board of the publication The Environmental Professional, is a member of the board of control of the Water Environment Federation and is a delegate from ORNL to the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science. She is also a founding member of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Association for Women In Science.

Hunsaker and her husband, Donald, reside in Kingston.
