Gilliland named vice president, associate director at LMER

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., June 18, 1997 — R.G. (Gil) Gilliland of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been named vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation and ORNL associate director for Energy and Engineering Sciences.

He has served as acting associate director since October 1996 after having been director of ORNL's Engineering Technology Division.

Gilliland has worked for more than 30 years in different aspects of the materials field with experience in research and development, industrial management and academic areas.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee, a master of science degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Gilliland is a member of the American Society of Materials-International, American Foundryman's Society, Iron and Steel Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering, Industrial Research Institute and American Welding Society. He is a registered professional engineer, holds several patents and has published more than 40 technical publications about materials processing.

He was chairman of the 1996 Lockheed Martin United Way campaign in Oak Ridge.

Gilliland and his wife, Gail, are residents of Tellico Village. They have five adult children.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
