Mulholland receives Distinguished Alumni Award from University of North Carolina

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 19, 1995 — Dr. Patrick J. Mulholland, a senior research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina's Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.

The award was presented as part of the 75th anniversary celebration for the UNC Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. A faculty committee reviewed the work of more than 1,800 alumni from its department who work in academia, government and industry. Mulholland, a 1979 graduate, was one of five recipients of the distinguished alumni award.

Mulholland received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in environmental engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., before earning his doctorate degree in environmental biology from UNC.

Mulholland joined ORNL in 1979. His research topics include ecology of stream ecosystems, biogeochemistry and hydrology of watersheds and the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. Mulholland has published more than 70 related papers and reports. He is co-author of a chapter on climate change effects on freshwaters for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that will be issued by the United Nations.

Mulholland and his wife, Cathey Daniels, live in Oak Ridge with their children Anna 11, Rick, 8, and Joe, 5.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
