ORNL engineer invited to review EIA publication

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., June 5, 1996 — J. Michael MacDonald, nationally recognized expert on energy efficiency methods and program manager in the Energy Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), was recently selected by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) to give an expert's view on its forthcoming publication.

The EIA publication, Measuring Energy Efficiency in the United States' Economy, was reviewed by MacDonald, who presented his findings on energy efficiency, along with participants from other federal laboratories, universities and the private sector at a workshop at DOE headquarters in Washington in February. The purpose of the publication is to report on energy efficiency in buildings, transportation, industry, utilities, and in the U.S. economy as a whole.

Because of the worldwide implications of the way that energy efficiency is measured and reported in the United States, representatives of the International Energy Agency were also present at the review session.

MacDonald, who is well-known for his research programs on energy efficiency of commercial and multifamily buildings, is also recognized for his work on energy audit methods and assessment of energy savings measures.

Prior to joining ORNL in 1984, MacDonald was a research engineer at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. He has been involved in projects that deal with building mechanical system design and energy efficiency at Union Carbide Corp., TRW Energy Systems, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and 3M Company.

A native of Minneapolis, MacDonald earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is a registered engineer and has been an associate member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for more than 21 years. He has authored numerous publications and presented several programs on energy efficiency in commercial and residential dwellings.

MacDonald lives in Knoxville with his wife and family.
