Buchanan named division director

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sep. 21, 2000 — Michelle Buchanan has been named director of the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Buchanan previously was associate director of ORNL's Life Sciences Division and will remain director of the Center for Structural Molecular Biology, which is a collaboration of the Life Sciences, Solid State and Chemical and Analytical Sciences divisions. Buchanan was formerly the leader of ORNL's Organic and Biological Mass Spectrometry Group .

She has conducted research in analytical chemistry ranging from analysis of biological molecules to distinguishing into the differences between fingerprints of children and adults. She has published more than 150 scientific papers and reports and received an R&D 100 Award in 1986 for development of ionization detectors and holds two patents.

Buchanan has served on six editorial boards and been an officer in the American Chemical Society's Division of Analytical Chemistry and its East Tennessee Chapter and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. She is an adjunct professor of chemistry and faculty member of the Genome Science and Technologies program at the University of Tennessee, and serves on a number of boards for various universities and institutions.

Buchanan holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas and a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin.

She and her husband, A.C., live in West Knoxville with their daughter, Lauren.
