Audio Spot: High School students writing assessment of DOE's Oak Ridge Reservation report

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 20, 2005 — Scientists and staff of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory are working with 30 Karns High School students to summarize the Annual Site Environmental Report about the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Reservation.

The Department of Energy's Tim Joseph says the students are working to convert technical information into a more readable format for the general public.

"They take the site environmental report and pick out what they think is important and they turn it into something the public can understand," Joseph says.

Karns teacher Heather Bock says the final summary will be sent to local, state and federal officials.

"They're a little overwhelmed by the work they have to do, but they're also excited to see that they get to produce something that's real life and something they can publish and that's going to be important for our area," Bock says.

Oak Ridge's Joan Hughes says the experience may trigger students to think about their avenues for the future.

"They're getting exposed to disciplines that they didn't know existed before - graphics, technical writing," Hughes says. "They're getting a real wide exposure to a lot of career opportunities."
