ORNL Awards of Excellence presented to three divisions

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 15, 1999 — Three divisions within the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have been presented Awards of Excellence.

"These awards of excellence recognize the very best efforts of our Laboratory to accomplish the work that needs to be done in an effective, efficient and most professional way," said Dr. Alvin Trivelpiece, ORNL director. "The divisions that have earned these awards have done so through a truly teamwide effort including many individuals who have worked hard for a common goal."

Awards were presented to the Life Sciences Division, Engineering Division and Engineering Technology Division.

The Award of Excellence in Research and Development was presented to the Life Sciences Division "for substantial and significant advancements of the state of science in functional genomics, bioinformatics, structural molecular biology and computational biology methods."

The Engineering Division won the Award of Excellence in Operations and Support "for exceeding expectations in reducing cost for engineering services, for constructive collaboration with other ORNL organizations and for providing new and innovative options for accomplishment of work."

The Award of Excellence in Environment, Safety and Health was presented to the Engineering and Technology Division "for leadership and programmatic improvement in environment, safety and health, and for demonstrated leadership in implementation of ORNL's Integrated Safety Management Program.

ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
