Linked Studies of Hydrology and Biology

The U.S. Geological Survey sponsored a special session at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2001 Fall Meeting, San Francisco, CA, December 10-14, 2001, on "Linked Studies of Hydrology and Biology." This session focused on the interdependence of aquatic life and the quality of water they live in. Due to the complexity of this interdependence, multidisciplinary studies have the best hope of bringing to light information that is needed to understand the effects of contaminants on aquatic life. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists presented multidisciplinary research from the Department of the Interior's Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative. The Initiative is a multi-agency effort with the objectives of (1) monitoring to determine long-term trends in amphibian populations, (2) conducting research into the causes of recent amphibian declines and malformations, and (3) making information on amphibians available to land managers and the public.
