SPG ________________________________ U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Health Diplomacy Weekly Update 2008 Week # 8: 14 June - 20 June In support of Secretary Leavitt's Health Diplomacy Initiative, the USPHS Commissioned Corps will participate with the U.S. Navy on three missions designed to increase the operational capacity of U.S. government personnel to deliver humanitarian assistance, perform public health assessments, conduct public health infrastructure repair and provide health care training of indigenous health care workers in the Caribbean, Latin America, the Pacific Rim and Pacific Islands during the spring, summer and fall of 2008. USS BOXER USPHS Officer-in-Charge (OIC): CAPT Dean Coppola * The ship completed its mission in Peru and is headed back to San Diego, CA. * USPHS Team 2 disembarked the ship in Peru and returned to their duty stations. * Photos of the mission in Peru can be found at: http://picasaweb.google.com/pinto91k/LTLeavittUSSBoxerTeam2PhotosPeru <http://picasaweb.google.com/pinto91k/LTLeavittUSSBoxerTeam2PhotosPeru       > * CAPT Coppola, CDR Eckert and LT Leavitt are assembling the mission After Action Report during the ship's transit to San Diego. USNS MERCY USPHS OIC: CAPT Kevin Prohaska * The ship completed its mission in Cotabato, Philippines, stayed 2 days in Manila and arrived in Vietnam on 19 June. * Embarked personnel are preparing for the beginning of missions in Vietnam. * All three USPHS officers who were on RON missions in Samar, Philippines were safely returned to the ship. They reported over 10,000 patient encounters while on the RON. * All USPHS officers attended a Navy award and promotion ceremony. * Primary Care staff, aided by LCDR Chau (who is a specialist in toxic chemicals), spent several hours cleaning up a mercury spill on the ship caused by a broken sphygmomanometer. The crew followed instructions per the EPA website. The spill was completely contained, and all biohazardous waste was bagged and stored. All personnel involved in this incident have had serum drawn for mercury screening and an incident report was generated as per ship's protocols. * CAPT Prohaska, CDR Esplin, and LCDR Kleiman attended a formal dinner on the flight deck to celebrate the completion of the Philippine phase of the mission. There were several dignitaries at this event, including the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines. During the event CAPT Prohaska thanked the U.S. Ambassador for her support of the Pacific Mission and was able to describe the USPHS activities. * USPHS mental health officers met with and counseled the 50+ reservists who disembarked the ship in Manila. They conveyed information regarding stress response. USS KEARSARGE USPHS OIC: TBD * Detachment #1 Status: (05 August - 11 September). Still need 1 Physician (FP/ER). * Detachment #2 Status: (13 September - 19 October). Still need 1 Physician (FP/ER), DEN, VET and ENG. * Detachment #3 Status: (20 October - 01 December).
