________________________________ Subject: USS Boxer & USNS Mercy U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Health Diplomacy Weekly Update 2008 Week # 7: 07 June - 13 June In support of Secretary Leavitt's Health Diplomacy Initiative, the USPHS Commissioned Corps will participate with the U.S. Navy on three missions designed to increase the operational capacity of U.S. government personnel to deliver humanitarian assistance, perform public health assessments, conduct public health infrastructure repair and provide health care training of indigenous health care workers in the Caribbean, Latin America, the Pacific Rim and Pacific Islands during the spring, summer and fall of 2008. USS BOXER USPHS Officer-in-Charge (OIC): CAPT Dean Coppola * The ship arrived in Callao, Peru for several days of liberty in Lima starting on 06 June after which missions began ashore. * The USPHS dentist and dental hygienist both continued to see patients at the ship's dental clinic while in transit. The USPHS dentist was requested to serve in country for all six mission days as apposed to the 3 and 1 rotation due to her Spanish speaking abilities and to provide respite to the other members of the team. * The Preventive Medicine team spent much of their time at the Huacho Regional Hospital meeting with 5 HN physicians from 4 different localities where they provided trainings and assessments on water quality, vector control and solid waster issues. Another team did two site safety assessments where our teams were working. The USPHS preventive medicine physician met with the epidemiology department of the hospital. One of the primary concerns was early infant diarrheal diseases. She also met with the Quality Assurance Division at the Huacho Regional Hospital. The USPHS EHO and other team members trained local Huara public health professionals and providers on waste water, leishmaniasis and food safety. The USPHS ENG was part of the team that went with the Huara mayor to see several of water sites in the district where they collected and analyzed water samples. USNS MERCY USPHS OIC: CAPT Kevin Prohaska * USPHS officers are participating in a variety of missions in and around Cotabato, Philippines. * The USPHS dentist remains on a 14 day "remain overnight" (RON) MEDCAP in Samar and is scheduled to rejoin the ship on 14 June. * The embarked USPHS pharmacist safely returned from the RON MEDCAP in Marawi. In total, she was on site for 6 days, leaving on 6 June and returning on 11 June. The mission was very successful. In total she saw several thousand patients and dispensed many more prescriptions. The mission was extremely busy and several locations required up to a 2 hour drive to and from the site. The living conditions of the communities visited lacked sanitation, electricity, and running water. * The Preventive Medicine team members have been assisting the SEEBEES in multiple construction projects; providing the SEEBEES with engineering advice that resulted in significant improvement in planed drainage systems and other water projects; providing technical help with survey equipment; providing multiple training sessions to the SEEBEES and local population; reviewing water quality data today and compared them against the EPA's Maximum Contaminant Levels; giving presentations on various infectious disease topics. * USPHS mental health professionals have been providing lectures on the Psychological Responses to Disaster. They also met to discuss, in conjunction wit the ship's Chaplain, strategies to "debrief" crew members who participated in shore missions while in the RP. * Detachment #2 Status: (03 July - 04 August). Still need 1 extra EHO or ENG. * Detachment #3 Status: (04 August - 01 September). Still need 1 Dental Hygienist plus 1 extra EHO or ENG. USS KEARSARGE USPHS OIC: TBD * Detachment #1 Status: (05 August - 11 September). Still need 1 Physician (FP/ER) and DEN. * Detachment #2 Status: (13 September - 19 October). Still need 1 Physician (FP/ER), DEN and ENG. * Detachment #3 Status: (20 October - 01 December). Still need 1 Physician (FP/ER), DEN and EHO. mailgate.prime.tcrhcc.org made the following annotations --------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTICE: This e-mail message, including any attachments it may contain, is intended for the exclusive use of the recipient(s) named above.
