ORNL receives its third consecutive Pollution Prevention Best-In-Class award from DOE. This year's award cites four areas that, together, made ORNL the top national laboratory in P2. Jeff Wadsworth, ORNL Director, recently congradulated the ORNL staff for winning the award. "ORNL's dedication to operating an environmentally responsible facility has resulted in the Laboratory's third consecutive Pollution Prevention Best-In-Class award from DOE. The award, presented by the ORNL Site Office's Johnny Moore, cited our efforts with the environmentally conscious designs incorporated in our new construction, transportation initiatives such as flex-fuel vehicles and the bike path, the further improvement of the Fabrication Division's water-jet cutter, and the former Condensed Matter Sciences Division's materials disposition initiative, which resulted in the recycling, reuse, or sale of 150 tons of material. Congratulations to all of the Laboratory organizations who have worked to make ORNL one of the DOE system's leading labs in pollution prevention," Wadsworth said. ORNL was the P2 best-in-class winner in 2005 and shared the award in 2004 with the combined Battelle-run laboratories.(updated 08/01/06) |

ORNL’s paper recycling program is changing! For the past 13 years we have been recycling paper in two streams: white paper and mixed paper. However, markets for waste paper have been changing in the past few years. New paper mills have opened in the Southeast that can take mixed paper to make products that before required white paper only. The difference in value between mixed paper and white paper is now low enough where it no longer makes sense to go through the trouble of recycling them separately. So starting now we no longer need to separate paper for recycling. All paper will be picked up on Wednesdays. Signage will eventually be changed. Until then use all paper bins for all paper. It is still important to keep plastic, like sheet protectors and overhead slides, out of the paper recycling bins. Battelle Memorial Institute has won the prestigious White House 'Closing the Circle' Award. This award is given by the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, recognizing outstanding environmental stewardship through pollution prevention, recycling, green purchasing, sustainable building and the use of environmental management systems. Specifically, this award recognizes Battelle's commitment to Environmental Stewardship and implementation of enhanced Environmental Management Systems at ORNL, BNL, and PNNL. Battelle was one of two winners in the Environmental Management Systems Category, joined by Fort Bragg's Sustainability Management System Team. Battelle and ORNL win DOE Pollution Prevention Awards. Ray Orbach announced Battelle Memorial Institute is the winner of the 'DOE SC Pollution Prevention - Best in Class Award', for its 'Corporate Commitment to Environmental Stewardship and Enhanced Environmental Management Systems'. Awards are given to those sites and/or projects that demonstrate significant benefits to the public, significant cost savings to DOE, and demonstrate the use or development of innovative approaches, techniques, or technologies that reduce or eliminate pollution. This award recognizes Battelle's cooperate efforts managing BNL, ORNL, PNNL, and BCO DOE Projects.
It was also announced that BNL and ORNL (along with Fermi, ORISE and SLAC) have received individual 'DOE SC Pollution Prevention - Accomplishment Awards'. BNL received recognition for its 'Mixed Waste Elimination through Process Modification' and ORNL for its 'Integration of Environmental Sustainability Principles [in new facility construction] at ORNL'.As award recipients, SC has recommended to EH that these nominations be forwarded to EPA for consideration under the 'White House Closing the Circle Awards' program. Record Amount of Paper Recycled. As a result of hundreds of employees cleaning out their offices during July, August and September, ORNL set a quarterly record for paper recycled. Nearly 94 tons of paper was recycled including 18 tons of journals discarded by the Central Library. The previous quarterly record was 66 tons set in 1998. Recycling is the least expensive way of disposing of waste paper at ORNL. Always use the recycling bins in your building for discarding waste paper or contact David Wasserman (576-8832, e-mail dq4) if extra bins are needed. Battery Recycling Program Up and Running. ORNL now has a contract in place to recycle all types of batteries. Open cell lead-acid batteries (car batteries) continue to be recycled by the Garage. If you have a spent open cell lead-acid battery, please call the Garage to see about having it recycled. All other types of batteries, including sealed lead-acid, can be recycled by placing them in a collection bucket in your building. Contact the 'Battery Bucket Custodian' in your building to find out where the bucket is located. To set up a battery collection point in your building contact David Wasserman at 576-8832 or e-mail at dq4. Batteries recycled include alkaline, carbon zinc, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride, mercury, silver, lithium, zinc air, and sealed lead-acid.
