Welcome to the home page of the 26th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals!  The 26th symposium continues a series that focuses on improving the technology and economics of fuels and chemicals production. This year’s program provided the opportunity for experts from around the world to gather and discuss the latest research breakthroughs and results in biotechnology. A variety of formal technical sessions, a poster session, and informal discussion groups allowed the exchange of new information among attendees from industrial, academic, and government sectors.

Congratulations to Guido Zacchi of Lund University, the winner of the 2004 C. D. Scott Award.   This award was established in 1994 to recognize distinguished individuals in the application of biotechnology to produce fuels and chemicals.

Congratulations also to the outstanding student poster award winners.  In the Scientific Category:  Stacy Hutchens, University of Tennessee, "Biopolymer-Patterned Nanoparticle Deposition and in the Engineering Category:  Yongming Zhu, Auburn University, "High Solids Dilute-acid Pretreatment of Corn Stover Using a Percolation Reactor."

Final Attendee List - please verify your information, and notify watlingtonnw@ornl.gov if changes should be made.  The response for photographs was underwhelming, but those that were submitted will be published.  It's not too late to submit a photograph if you'd like to be included.

This site contains the schedules and viewable abstracts from the symposium, which was held May 9-12, 2004 at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday Inn and Centennial Convention Center, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

We thank you for either attending the conference or for just visiting our website. If you have questions, you may call the conference office at (865) 576-1645, or e-mail luffmanaj@ornl.gov.

Session 1A Sunday

1:00-5:00 p.m.

Feedstock Supply, Logistics, Processing, and Composition.  Topics for this session will include sustainability considerations, environmental and economic impacts, innovative collection, storage and transportation methods, and plant science applications.

Session 1B Sunday

 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Enzyme Catalysis and Engineering.  This session will focus on identification, modification, development, and cost-effective production and use of enzymes to achieve numerous biological and chemical transformations.

Session 2 Monday

 8:15 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Microbial Catalysis and Metabolic Engineering.  This session will focus on finding new and further developing existing micro-organisms for improved performance to produce fuels and chemicals.

Special Topics Monday

 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Special Topics

Lignin from Biorefineries:  Chemical and Biochemical Perspective and Applications

Biohydrogen:  The Challenges and the Possible Future

Poster Session Monday

5:30-9:30 p.m.

This program will showcase the full range of topics for the formal sessions.  Presenters are encouraged to set up their posters early.  The poster format is most appropriate for presentations that benefit from detailed descriptions and direct interaction between the author and other participants.

Session 3 Tuesday

 8:15 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Bioprocessing and Separations.  This session will cover reactor configurations and the integration of engineering with microbiology, biochemistry, and chemistry to produce fuels and chemicals.

Session 4 Tuesday

 7:00-9:00 p.m.

The Lighter Side of Policy and Politics.  A round table discussion on the externalities needed to advance biorefineries into reality.  These include finance, risk, law and regulations, government policy, and nongovernmental organizations.

Session 5 Wednesday

 8:15 a.m.-12:00 noon

Biobased Industrial Chemicals.  This session will discuss the production of chemicals and other value-added bioproducts from biological rather than petrochemical routes.  Advances in process integration, demonstration, economics, and commercialization will be highlighted.

Session 6A Wednesday

 1:15-5:00 p.m.

Biomass Pretreatment and Hydrolysis.  This session will focus on novel reactor configurations and new process approaches for pretreatment and saccharification of biomass.

Session 6B Wednesday

 1:15-5:00 p.m.

Plant Biotechnology and Feedstock Genomics.  The potential impact of transgenic, genetic, and genomic-based modifications to the architectural, compositional or metabolic functions of plants will be discussed in this session in relation to an enhanced renewables base.

Reception & Banquet Wednesday

 6:00 p.m.

Speaker and entertainment TBD.  Presentation of the C. D. Scott Award.
