About the Cancer Health Disparities Progress Review

Mission

While cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, it is the most feared disease in America. With increasing frequency and clarity, studies continue to document the unequal burden experienced by America's medically underserved, low-income, and minority populations. Various studies and reports provide growing evidence that a considerable number of Americans receive neither the most appropriate care nor adequate prevention and detection services for many types of cancer. Such an unequal burden of cancer in our society is more than a scientific and medical challenge. It is a moral and ethical dilemma for our Nation.

Phase I of the PRG Process

To overcome this burden, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is striving to develop new models and new partnerships among public health and clinical care systems, providers within these systems, and the diverse populations they serve. The Cancer Health Disparities Progress Review Group (CHD PRG) will be utilized specifically to engage basic researchers, health care policy makers, providers, and consumers to assess system barriers and to actualize proven interventions for cancer prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and quality end-of-life care for all.

The goals of the Cancer Health Disparities Progress Review Group are to:

Comprehensively define and describe issues related to cancer health disparities.
Identify areas of strength, gaps, opportunities, and priorities to address cancer health disparities in research and intervention development.
Facilitate the adoption and implementation of evidence-based policy, community and clinical interventions and evaluate their impact on specific cancer health
