In 1997, there were an estimated 1.6 million current residents and 2.4 million discharges from 17,000 nursing homes nationwide. The average number of beds per nursing home was 107 with an occupancy rate of 88 percent. The majority of nursing home residents and discharges were elderly, white, and female. These facilities were predominately proprietary and certified by both Medicare and Medicaid.

Data Highlights:

bullet graphicWomen have historically made up 75 percent of residents in nursing homes; in 1997, women accounted for 72 percent of the total. The average age for women was 83 years while for men it was 76 years.

bullet graphicSeventy-nine percent of nursing home facilities were mid-sized (50-199 beds) and only 8 percent had more than 200 beds. By geographic region, the largest proportions of nursing homes were in the Midwest and South.

bullet graphicThe vast majority of nursing home residents were 65 years and over (91 percent) and 46 percent were 85 years and older.
