In 1993 an estimate of 62.5 million visits were made to outpatient departments (OPD's) in the United States. This represents approximately 24.6 visits per 100 persons. A new report entitled National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 1993 Outpatient Department Summary presents OPD patient and visit characteristics. Data was obtained from OPD visits from the 1993 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Data Highlights: Females had a higher visit rate (62.3 percent per 100 persons) compared with their male counterparts (29.8 visits per 100 persons). Medicaid (31.1 percent), private/commercial insurance (27.0 percent), and Medicare (16.9 percent) was the three listed most often as the expected source of payment for the visit. Blood pressure check was the most frequently performed medicial test, followed by blood tests ( 20.5 percent) and urinalysis (13.9 percent). A total of 75.7 million drug mentions or an average of 1.2 drug mentions per OPD visit was recorded. Tylenol was the most frequently prescribed medication with 2.2 million mentions.
