Office Visits for Glaucoma: United States, 1991-92 Advance Data 262. An estimated 17.5 million office visits were made at which the principal diagnosis was glaucoma according to a new report, Office Visits for Glaucoma: United States, 1991-92. This report presents national estimates pertaining to glaucoma-related office visits. Statistics are presented on patient characteristics, physician practice characteristics, and visit characteristics with a diagnosis of glaucoma. The estimates presented in this report are based upon data collection in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Data Highlights: The overall rate of office visits with a principal diagnosis of glaucoma was 3.5 visits per 100 persons per year. Glaucoma visit rates per year were higher for females (4.2 visits) compared with males (2.8 visits). Glaucoma accounted for 76.9 percent of visits made to ophthalmologists. The remainder (23.2 percent) were made to other specialists. The majority of glaucoma visits (92.8 percent) were made by persons aged 45 years and over.
