Red Flag Warning: Gusty southwest winds and low relative humidities for northeast California, the northern two thirds of Nevada and southeast Oregon.

Weather Discussion: Low pressure will settle off the coast of the Northwest Area today as a high pressure ridge strengthens over the Rocky Mountain Area. The pressure gradient between the two systems will provide windy and mainly dry conditions over much of the Great Basin. There will be a few thunderstorms today in the afternoon heating from southeast Montana southward down the spine of the Rockies. Most of the rest of the west is not expected to have much convective activity. Hurricane Alex will continue its march into the North Atlantic today and will remain well offshore.

Weather Discussion: A weakening low pressure system will move across the western portion of the Northern Rockies today. The storm will provide the trigger for thunderstorms from northeast Oregon eastward into the Dakotas. Thunderstorms will also occur from Arizona north into the Eastern Great Basin and Rocky Mountain Areas. California, Washington and western portions of the Great Basin will mainly be dry. However, cooler temperatures will be working their way into the Northwest. Along the East Coast, tropical storm Alex will bring strong wind and heavy rains to the Outer Banks. In eastern Alaska, partly cloudy sky conditions will prevail underneath building high pressure.

Fire Weather Watch: Gusty winds and low relative humidity for the upper two-thirds of Nevada.

Weather Discussion: A trough of low pressure will move down the British Columbia coast today. This storm will cause weak low pressure sitting off the California coast to eject inland. The low will move into Oregon this evening, triggering thunderstorms from Oregon eastward and southward into the Northern Rockies and Great Basin. Some monsoonal moisture will also be moving up from the Southwest, causing thunderstorms in the Rocky Mountain Area. Some of the storms today may be dry. Winds will be gusty and strong today across the west as well. In Alaska, partly cloudy sky conditions can be expected behind a departing low pressure area.

August 1, 2004

National Preparedness Level 3

Red Flag Warning: Dry lightning and strong, gusty outflow winds for most of Utah.S trong, gusty winds and low relative humidity for most of Nevada; dry lightning in central and eastern Nevada.

Fire Weather Watch: Gusty winds and low relative humidity for the northern two- thirds of Nevada. Dry lightning is expected in Utah and the central and eastern zones in Nevada. Weather Discussion: Low pressure deepening off the West Coast will continue to push mid level moisture into the northwest quadrant of the country today. As a result, scattered thunderstorms are possible. The Eastern Great Basin, Southwest and Rocky Mountain Areas will remain under a hot high pressure system. Afternoon winds will mix down in these areas, causing some problematic fire behavior. Eastern parts of the Northern Rockies will see hot and dry conditions with breezy afternoon wind. Some thunderstorms will develop in western parts of the Northern Rockies as well. In Alaska, low pressure will provide rain showers in the morning over the ongoing fires.
