Care has been taken to use remote sensing satellites to correctly locate and identify the fires. For a listing of the current fire status and location of fires, see the interagency fire situation report. The USDA Forest Service uses the most current and complete data available. GIS data and product accuracy may vary. Using GIS products for purposes other than those for which they were intended may yield inaccurate or misleading results. Initial attack activity was heavy in the Eastern Great Basin Area, moderate in the Rocky Mountain Area, and light elsewhere. Nationally, 235 new fires were reported. One large fire was reported in the Eastern Great Basin Area. Five large fires were contained, two in the Northwest Area and one each in the Southern California, Rocky Mountain and Southern Areas. Initial attack activity moderate in the Western Great Basin Area and light elsewhere. Nationally, 136 new fires were reported. Two of these became large fires, one each in the Eastern Great Basin and Rocky Mountain Areas. Three large fires were contained, one in the Rocky Mountain Area and two in the Northern California Area. Very high to extreme fire indices were reported in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
