Nearly all of Turkey enjoyed sunny clear skies on June 23, 2005, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. Only the Kuzey Anadolu Daglari, the mountains that hug the shores of the Black Sea, are covered with light clouds. In the center of the image, the dry lake bottom of Tuz Golu forms a bright off-white, distended circle. This salty lake dries in the summer, leaving a bed of salt. Elsewhere in the image, MODIS has detected a handful of fires, which have been marked with red dots. In the lower center portion of the image, the sun’s reflection has turned the surface of the Mediterranean Sea into a silvery mirror.
