The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. The foundation uses three criteria for selection of fellows: exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.

Benjamin Santer (1998)
Among his accomplishments, Benjamin Santer served as lead author for Chapter 8 (“Detection of Climate Change, and Attribution of Causes”) of the 1995 Second Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This seminal report concluded that “the balance of evidence suggests a discernable human influence on global climate.”
