Who is required to register as an Athletic Trainer?

Anyone who performs athletic training duties and/or publicly promotes themselves to be an athletic trainer must register as an athletic trainer under the new law.

Are any groups exempt from registration under the law? 
Yes, the law allows for the following exemptions:
  • Health care providers or other licensed / registered  persons under any other statute, which allows them to  perform duties of an athletic trainer.

  • Anyone practicing athletic training employed by the Federal Government or any of its agencies.

  • Anyone following a supervised course of study leading to a degree or registration as an athletic trainer.

  • Persons performing athletic training for purposes of continuing education consulting or training in association with registered athletic trainers (see ORS for further clarification).

  • Elementary or secondary school teachers, coaches or volunteers who do not hold themselves out to the public to be athletic trainers or perform the services of an athletic trainer are exempt from this law. 
What are the registration fees for being licensed?
The initial and annual registration fee is $275. Application fee for the registration is $100. A late renewal fee is $50. Failure to obtain a registration could result in civil penalties of up to $5,000.
