The Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners (OBPE) recognizes that submitting a request for investigation of a psychologist is an intimidating event. This summary is designed to help you understand the procedure the Board follows when it processes a complaint against a health professional.
After your complaint is received, OBPE’s investigator opens a file and sends you a letter stating that your case is being investigated. The investigator then collects evidence. The investigator will give you an opportunity to be interviewed, and you can always provide additional material during the investigation. The investigator writes a formal report of facts and the report is presented to the Board. All of the evidence about your case is confidential. The report is discussed only among Board members, legal counsel and staff.
While the Board attempts to complete each investigation within 120 days, the Board may extend the 120-day period in 30-day increments for good cause. Good cause may occur if the investigator does not receive documentation in a timely manner, if necessary witnesses are unavailable, or for other reasons that make extra time necessary. You can assist the investigator by responding quickly to questions and by providing requested information promptly.
The Board will notify you of the outcome of the investigation. The Board’s actions in regard to your complaint only become a public record when a majority of the Board votes to implement disciplinary action against the provider. Your full name will never appear in a public disciplinary action, although your initials may be used. You may request a copy of any disciplinary orders issued by the Board.

For the Board to complete a thorough investigation, your caregiver needs to receive specific permission from you to discuss your care with the Board. Please sign the Authorization to Disclose Protected Health Information and include it with your Investigation Request.
