Commerce Secretary
Evans and Governor Ridge Spotlight Private Sector Technology for
Homeland Security
U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans and Director of Homeland Security
Tom Ridge today highlighted the importance of private sector research
and development of new technologies to homeland security at a first-of-its
kind exposition in Washington, D.C..
The
Expo, hosted by the Department of Commerce in association with the
Office of Homeland Security, attracted over 200 companies from 36
states. Participants showed their products and services to federal
procurement officers, state and territorial homeland security advisors,
law enforcement officials, Congressional members and staff, and others
involved in strengthening the defense of our nation.
"Innovations
are spurring new products, new companies, and new jobs," said
Evans. "The exhibits in this room take us to the frontiers of
knowledge and discovery and embody the genius of the American people."
"The
companies here do not see homeland security as simply a challenge,
but also as an opportunity -- an exciting one," said Ridge. "They
can help their shareholders, their consumers, and their country at
the same time."
Over
300 exhibit booths showcased products from companies focused on telecommunications,
computer security, biotechnology, hazardous materials detection, and
first responder equipment. Also, more than 20 breakout sessions were
held discussing such topics as intelligence community technology,
first responder technology, and disaster recovery solutions.
The
two-day event brought together companies of all sizes to showcase
their technology in response to the President's National Strategy
for Homeland Security. The Expo furthered the President's goals of
stronger coordination with state and local governments and the private
sector, and increased use of America's talents and resources to enhance
our protection and reduce our vulnerability to terrorist attacks.
