SECRETARY EVANS STATEMENT ON SENATE PASSAGE OF TRADE PROMOTION AUTHORITY

Today’s bi-partisan vote by the Senate to grant President Bush Trade Promotion Authority sends a strong signal to financial markets and to capital cities around the globe that the U.S. will once again lead the world on trade.

The benefits of expanding trade are felt around every kitchen table and on every farm, Main Street and factory floor across America. TPA means more, higher-paying jobs for American workers, farmers and ranchers and a higher quality of life for all American families.

Congress has now passed one of the most basic and effective ways to strengthen our nation’s economic security. Both the House and the Senate should be commended for passing this historic legislation and for acting on one of President Bush’s top legislative priorities.
