Statement by Secretary Evans on Tax Day

Washington, DC - Death and taxes, as they say, have always been certainties. But hard-working American taxpayers have something more positive to be certain about on this Tax Day. First, their taxes are lower than they were a year ago, and they can count on President Bush to continue to fight for policies that let them keep more of what they earn. Second, taxpayers trust that the tax dollars they send to Washington are focused on priorities of importance to all Americans-National Security, Homeland Security and Economic Security.

The President recognizes that lower tax rates fuel economic growth and help create the right environment for entrepreneurs to flourish. The tax cut softened the economic downturn, and in the process allowed all Americans to invest, save, and spend more of their own money.

Thanks to the President's efforts, both America and American taxpayers are better off today than they were just one year ago.
