General Motors Recognized For Its Commitment To Minority Business Growth

Washington, DC - Commerce Secretary Don Evans today presented General Motors (GM) Corporation of Detroit, MI, with the 2001 Distinguished Corporate Award for its exemplary performance in promoting minority business growth. Evans made the presentation to GM's Vice President Ken Coles at the Minority Business Development Agency's (MBDA) 19th annual Minority Enterprise Development Conference.

The Distinguished Corporate Award each year recognizes a corporation for its outstanding programs and performance which have best fostered the growth and support of minority business.

"I commend GM for its dedication to minority business growth. This award is a true testament of the company's commitment to leveling the playing field for all Americans", said Evans.

GM was selected for its dedication to minority supplier development. Last year, GM's minority supplier spending increased to over $4 billion. GM continues to lead the automotive industry in the development and implementation of joint venture/strategic alliances, creating access to capital and technology to non-traditional business sectors and positioning minority business enterprises to remain in the global supply chain.
