Statement by Department of Commerce General Counsel Ted Kassinger Regarding the Proposed Verisign-Icann Agreement

May 14, 2001

Washington, DC

"The Department of Commerce has been reviewing the VeriSign-ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) proposal. We have communicated our general thinking, are pleased with the progress, and are confident an agreement can be reached in the near term."

The Department of Commerce (DoC) sent a letter to interested parties on April 24th indicating they would receive the results of the DoC review no later than May 14, 2001. The Department met with VeriSign and ICANN to "communicate the results" (consistent with the April 24th correspondence) this afternoon.
