U.S. Commerce Secretary Announces China Business Development Mission Participants

First U.S. Business Development Mission to China Since its Accession to the WTO

Washington, DC - U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans today announced that 15 companies will join him on a business development mission to Beijing and Shanghai, China, April 21-25.

The business delegation (see attached list) will seek to expand and develop new export opportunities to China in information technology, telecommunications, clean energy and environmental technology, medical products, and construction equipment and services.

"I will travel to China with a cross-section of America's business leaders -- small and large -- to help further President Bush's commitment to opening new avenues of trade opportunity for U.S. businesses," said Evans.

Mission participants will develop contacts within the Chinese government and meet with potential business partners. For some participating businesses, this trip will open the door to China as a market for the first time. For others who already conduct business in China, the mission will offer opportunities to expand agreements with existing Chinese partners and cultivate new ones.

The goal of the mission is to strengthen economic relations between China and the United States by helping U.S. businesses explore new trade and investment opportunities that have resulted from China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Evans will also promote stronger U.S.-China commercial ties by co-chairing the 14th session of the U.S. –China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade with Shi Guangsheng, China's Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC).
