Interoperability implies a better and mutual understanding between individuals or systems that need to work together. It is a fundamental challenge for knowledge discovery, development, and sharing. Interoperability allows the many components of space science organizations and space science systems to work together to achieve benefits for NASA and the public.

Interoperability is often implemented by creating individual agreements between concerned parties on the selection of a single common tool. However, developing individual agreements for each situation quickly becomes tedious. And when dealing with many individuals or organizations, agreeing to a single tool can become very difficult. So interoperability points to a wider vision and coordinated efforts among several communities. It’s a multi-faceted exercise including such things as standards use and development, creation of virtual systems providing glue between other systems, and building federations with agreements regarding common services.

SSDOO is actively working in all these areas to benefit the space science community. Our personnel actively participate in standardization activities and these standardization activities contribute to the development of reusable models. Use of these standards and reusable models can shorten design and development timelines, increase modeling consistency, and reduce mission risk. SSDOO participation in Virtual Observatory activities, for example, allows SSDOO to share its experience and allows all the parties to share in work of the others and to efficiently and productively use its resources. SSDOO is also the source of several common tools and formats used within the space community.
