Waste Site Reports: Pennsylvania

NOAA trust species in Pennsylvania include anadromous and catadromous species such as alewife, blueback herring, American shad, American eel, striped bass, bay anchovy, Atlantic sturgeon, and the federally endangered shortnose sturgeon. Beluga whales residing in Lake Erie are also of special concern to NOAA.

Military Sites in Pennsylvania

The NOAA CRC program has contributed to the understanding of ecological problems and participated in the decision-making process for USN Ship Parts Control Center and the USN Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, which is planned for redevelopment. The nature of defense-related activities involves chemicals that can be highly toxic and persistent in the environment. In Pennsylvania, contaminants of concern on DoD sites include VOCs, PCBs, PAHs, heavy metals, pesticides, and solvents. NOAA's input is needed now to ensure cleanups that are protective of coastal natural resources as well as human health. NOAA offers technical expertise and a perspective valued by both EPA and the military.

Areas of Special Concern in Pennsylvania

The NOAA CRC program works to protect and restore natural resources throughout Pennsylvania. However, the Delaware River has been historically identified as a spawning area for over 60 species of fish. At the same time, the Delaware Estuary is the world's largest freshwater port, with heavy maritime traffic. The Pennsylvania Bureau of Water Quality has issued an advisory against human consumption of several sport fish species in the Delaware River due to elevated concentrations of PCBs and chlordane in edible tissue. NOAA is focusing on addressing problems related to PCB contamination at several sites on the Delaware River to protect the endangered shortnose sturgeon, striped bass, and other important species. Many sites are also clustered along the Schuylkill river and are contributing trace elements that degrade sediment quality. The river provides spawning habitat for alewife, shad, and herring, and NOAA's efforts to address contamination should allow the river to be restored to productive use for spawning. Addressing contamination now is particularly important because there are plans to modify dams to allow fish passage into upstream portions of the river.
