In 2005, there were 8,000 seizures nationally valued at $93 million according to U.S. Customs. As of November 2006, over 14,000 seizures valued at more than $156 million had been made.

Gutierrez toured San Diego’s High Tech High and announced that the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) would expand its partnership with the school to offer workshops on building under sea robots (Remotely Operated Vehicles), a type of technology that is used for ocean exploration and research.
