Small Business Economic Research Highlighted At American Economic Association Annual Meeting
Three Sessions Organized By The Office Of Advocacy
WASHINGTON, D.C. Small business economic research will be highlighted at three sessions of the American Economic Association (AEA) annual meeting, currently being held in Washington, DC. The sessions are the first AEA seminars to be organized by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
"Im pleased that the American Economic Association has recognized the critical role that small business plays in our economy," said Dr. Chad Moutray, Chief Economist for Advocacy. "By organizing these sessions, we hope to learn more about why entrepreneurs decide to start businesses, the economic dynamics of small business, and why entrepreneurs decide to exit their chosen fields," he continued.
The Office of Advocacy sessions are titled "Firm Organization and Structure of Small Business" chaired by Dr. Zoltan Acs of the University of Baltimore, "Small Business Dynamics" chaired by Dr. Alicia Robb of the Federal Reserve Board held on Saturday, January 4, and "Entrepreneurs and Entrepreneurship" chaired by Dr. Joshua Lerner of Harvard Business School held on Sunday, January 5.
Economists from the Office of Advocacy will also present papers at the AEA meeting. Dr. Ying Lowrey will present "Entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Growth" and Brian Headd will present "Business Closures: Checking the Assumptions of Closures Being Considered Failures and Closure Rates Being High."
"The Office of Advocacy is charged with conducting the federal governments economic research on small business," said Thomas M. Sullivan, Chief Counsel for Advocacy. "By organizing these AEA sessions we put ourselves on the cutting edge of that research."

Created by Congress in 1976, the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is an independent voice for small business within the federal government. Appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the Chief Counsel for Advocacy directs the office. The Chief Counsel advances the views, concerns, and interests of small business before Congress, the White House, federal agencies, federal courts, and state policy makers. Economic research, policy analyses, and small business outreach help identify issues of concern. Regional Advocates and an office in Washington, DC, support the Chief Counsels efforts.
