The OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance will focus on providing career and technical
educators and their students with materials, guidance, and access to training resources that will
impact the occupational safety and health of young workers. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information for young workers on workplace
hazard recognition and prevention and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating
such information (e.g. print and electronic media, on-line forums, lesson plans, electronic
assistance tools and OSHA's and SkillsUSA's web sites) to educators, employers and young workers.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's and SkillsUSA's conferences state and chapter events, such
the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships.
- Work with other Alliance Program participants on specific issues and projects regarding young
workers that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
- Encourage SkillsUSA to build relationships with OSHA's Regional and Area Offices and other
Career Technical Student Organizations to address young worker safety and health issues.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on young
worker safety and health issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace.

- October 20-26, 2008:
2008 Drug-Free Work Week. SkillsUSA and a number of other Alliance Program
participants are supporting the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by
the U.S. Department of Labor’s
Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the
Week’s focus is educating employers, employees and the public about the
importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful
workplace.

the Special Joint Delegate Session.

"OSHA Update and the OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance," at the Official SkillsUSA Championships
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

SkillsUSA Alliance and the agency's compliance assistance activities during the conference.
- May 4-10, 2008:
2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. SkillsUSA and
a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good
Business." Sponsored annually by American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of
Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the
workplace.
- April 21, 2008: Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign Kick-off, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, New
York. U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
kicked off the OSHA national 2008 Teen Summer Job
Safety Campaign during an appearance on NBC's TODAY show. In addition, the event on Rockefeller
Plaza featured a
presentation by Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Edwin G.
Foulke, Jr. Representatives from Alliance Program participants, SkillsUSA, Independent Electrical
Contractors and National Association of Home Builders, also attended the event which included
SkillsUSA students demonstrating safe work practices for some of the most common tasks that teens
may encounter in summer jobs. Sponsored by OSHA, the Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign is a
multi-year project to increase awareness about workplace hazards and provide information about the
hazards to young workers and their parents.
- June 26-29, 2007: National Leadership and Skills Conference, Kansas City, Missouri.
- June 26-29, 2007: OSHA had an exhibit booth and distributed information on the OSHA and
SkillsUSA Alliance and the agency's compliance assistance activities during the conference.
- June 28, 2007: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation, "OSHA
Update and the OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance," at the SkillsUSA Championships VIP Breakfast.
- April 17, 2007: Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign Kick-off, Thomas Edison High School of
Technology, Silver Spring, Maryland. More than 130 safety and health professionals, teachers and
students attended the kick-off event featuring speeches by OSHA's Assistant Secretary, Edwin G.
Foulke, Jr., and Alliance Program participants, including SkillsUSA. In addition, SkillsUSA
members from Thomas Edison High School of Technology demonstrated safe and healthful work
practices such as proper use of hearing protection and other personal protective equipment, safe
use of hand tools and tips to avoid falls. Sponsored by OSHA, the Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign
is a multi-year project to increase awareness about workplace hazards and provide information
about the hazards to young workers and their parents.
- May 6-12, 2007: 2007 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. SkillsUSA and
a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2007 NAOSH Week; "All Modes of
Transportation." Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an
Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on
the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
- May 7, 2007: Representatives of SkillsUSA attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S.
Department of Labor. Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., USDOL-OSHA, was the keynote speaker
and presented "The Road to Safety" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and
health representatives.
- June 18-24, 2006: National Leadership and Skills Conference, Kansas City, Missouri.
- June 18-24, 2006: OSHA had an exhibit booth and distributed information on the OSHA and
SkillsUSA Alliance and the agency's compliance assistance activities during the conference.
- June 18-20, 2006: Dave McDonnell, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region VII, Wichita,
Kansas Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Don Guerra, Office of Training and Education, Directorate of
Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA; and Tony Towey, Office of Training and Education,
Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, provided the OSHA – 500 Trainer
Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry to 25 SkillsUSA
instructors.

SkillsUSA Championships VIP Breakfast.

the U.S. Department of Labor.
- April 6, 2006: Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign Kick-off, Edison Academy, Thomas A. Edison High
School, Alexandria, Virginia. More than 130 safety and health professionals, teachers and students
attended the kick-off event featuring speeches by OSHA's Assistant Secretary, Edwin G. Foulke,
Jr., and Alliance Program participants SkillsUSA and PLANET. In addition, SkillsUSA members from
Edison High School demonstrated safe work practices in landscaping. Sponsored by OSHA, the Teen
Summer Job Safety Campaign is a multi-year project to increase awareness about workplace hazards
and provide information about the hazards to young workers and their parents.
