Training Center Yorktown's Living Classroom Famous & Historic Trees Est. Nov 30, 1995 |

On November 30, 1995, twenty one Famous and Historical Trees were planted in a Living Classroom at Training Center Yorktown. The trees are grown from seeds or cuttings from trees having a unique place in history ranging from the American Revolution to the death of five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa. The trees were planted in honor of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Douglas A. Munro and Michael E. Thornton. These individuals, while a member of the Armed Forces, distinguished themselves by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their own lives, above and beyond the call of duty, while engaged in an action against an enemy force of the United States. The twenty one trees were planted by students from Yorktown Elementary and Middle Schools, assisted by the Chief Petty Officer's stationed at the then Reserve Training Center. These trees include a Honey Locust from Gettysburg, a White Oak from the home of Abraham Lincoln, a Crab Apple from the Sullivan Brothers home in Iowa, and many more.
